Even though we live in an age of endless images of ourselves and others transmitted through social media, we still struggle connecting on a deeper human and emotional level. How often do we really see the person we feel we are beyond the surface? As much as we are connected electronically and in the fleeting moment, we float un-tethered to the earth we share and the inner person we are. 

The portrait Metamorphosis embraces a vision of ourselves that is connected to the earth and nature. The young woman is crowned in a garland of twigs, leaves and butterflies, and wrapped in a shawl of flowers, transforming her from the everyday to a persona of the eternal mystery, magic and myths that also make up our common humanity.

This painting was done from life referencing the colors I saw at the time. The second painting Woman with Blue Headband (7 1/2 x 7) was done sometime after in the studio using my original painting as a reference so she looks a little different. I went for a more contemporary look.

This great old Chevrolet yellow truck was at the beach one morning in this spot and I fell in love with it and had to make a painting.

Painting outdoors has its rewards as well as challenges. Weather changes, shifting light and insects are just a few of those challenges. My plein air watercolors are done quickly (with the exception of Selden Road Blossoms) to catch the light at the time. I was freezing while painting Selden Road Blossoms during a New England Spring.

Here I am sitting on the rocks in Newport, Rhode Island. By the time I finished my small two hour painting, the light and color totally changed so you just have to roll with it. You can see the finished painting I was working on directly below the photograph of me.

There is a barn on Route 153 in Vermont that I have painted a number of times and in different seasons. The graphic on the side is now fading and not bright like it is here. The small sketch below (3” x 4”) shows it in winter.

This painting is very large - 4 x 5 feet. For reference I used only a 4” x 6 “ photo I took of the view to Central Park from my husband’s office. I made a grid on the small photo and blew it up to fit the large Arches roll watercolor cold press paper that was taped to my studio wall. At first glance it looks like high realism, but it is not as I opted not to use a straight edge to draw my lines, but rather marked them top to bottom then drew them freehand.

The next three paintings were each done on a full sheet of hot press watercolor paper (22 x 30). The Santa Fe train is a studio painting. Power Plant Facade and Coal Train Bridge Building were done on site en plein air.
